Loud speedo cable - fixed? - now silent, but not working

I finally had time to work on my loud speedometer. I watched a couple videos and thought "this will take an hour." Which was probably my first mistake. My speedo cable has been cleaned and greased, but when I put it back together, it now doesn't do anything. No sound. But no turning the speedometer readout either.

I detached from behind the cluster, pulled the cable out through the cab, then used brake cleaner to clean, then lubed up with grease and replaced. Then I snapped it back into the back of the cluster.

One thing I realized is that the cable is not long enough to get all the way to the transmission. So it must be multiple parts - not sure how that works. Did it not re-connect at the halfway point? Is it possible I'm just not getting it set right on either end?

Any ideas? And would love to know what I should try next. If I get a new cable, do I go for the entire length? Or just the part that goes through the firewall?

Please help. I have a bunch of other stuff to do, (like install my new dash) but I want to get this sorted first. Thanks to all the helpers out there!
