Glass installer near Gloucester, Massachusetts

My body guy that has been working on my blue 2 Wheel Dr. Blazer for about four years now is having a hard time installing my windshield. It does have the stainless trim and it is factory not aftermarket trim. The gasket I can’t remember the brand off the top of my head, but it was recommended by many on this forum. I believe it was precision.

He asked if I can reach out and find someone local to him that might be able to help. And it is made in USA Pilkington glass.

.

Precision gasket and use the trim from the earlier models where it has the deeper reaching-into-the-gasket lip/ridge on it. The later model trim with the shorter plunger is very difficult to install.

My solution to multiple installers not being able to get it done was to purchase new trim from LMC with the longer/deeper plunger then BANG they got it on the first try with the Precision gasket.

Isn’t there a different windshield gasket for the longer and shorter plungers? So I would need to buy new aftermarket trim and a new gasket?

I had a windshield replaced on my bronze blazer with the same gasket and factory trim a couple of years ago. He seemed to be able to get it installed within a couple of hours while I sat there. That installer is too far away to help my body guy.

.

Yes the trim + gasket for the selected year range (I think 71-72 went to the shallower trim).

Re: Glass installer near Gloucester, Massachusetts

I tried 4x to install mine, had to take it back out, wasted a bunch of gaskets..

As others have said, the early stainless trim has a longer 'depth' in the part that inserts into the gasket. And, the gasket you buy has to match the year of the trim. Ex. Later year trim wont work in an early gasket.

Also, this will sound weird. But KY Jelly. Put plenty around the cab windshield area, and into the grove where the glass inserts into the gasket. (I used QTips) The Glass has to be able to shift in the gasket as it is roped in.

Obviously, no KY in the grove for the trim. Just where the glass inserts into the gasket and the lip around the cab.

KY is water based too and wont get all over your dash like soapy water / spray. Just wipe it off. Mine went in fine, first try.

Its not easy no doubt. Good luck with it.

Re: Glass installer near Gloucester, Massachusetts

I installed glass for around 25 yrs, so done a bunch of these over the yrs and they are a pain. I’ve been out of it for almost 20 yrs now but had a ton of quality issues with precision gaskets. Although more expensive, Steele Rubber was always my preference. The biggest issue with keeping the trim in the rubber is usually across the top a few inches in from the corners where the sharpest part of the curve is. One thing you can try is after everything is together before installing the assembly in the truck is take masking tape and loop it across the glass/rubber/trim from inside to outside. The masking tape will tear as you install and is easily removed after it’s in. I also used a hook and installed the top first instead of pulling the rope if I had a couple extra helpers to keep it positioned in place holding the bottom corners. Once the top is in can pull the rope for the sides and bottom. It usually takes a few guys helping, holding in place and sometimes keeping a hand on the trim to keep it from popping out while working it in.

Not specifically a glass installer but I would reach out to Jamie (info below). HeÂ’s right in Gloucester and does incredible work from basic maintenance to frame off restorations. He replaced the windshield on my dadÂ’s 63 Nova and did a great job. He is cash only but his prices are extremely reasonable.

Re: Glass installer near Gloucester, Massachusetts

My 67 came without the trim so I decided that I wanted the trim. I had stripped a 71 Suburban some 30 years ago and used the trim and gasket from it. The windshield was original to the truck.

After 4 attempts with different aftermarket gaskets, the original GM one left the best overall fit and finish. Aftermarket gaskets didn't seat all the way on the inside of the glass opening. The aftermarket ones were definitely easier to work with because they were more pliable compared to a 55 year old GM gasket but would not seat properly or hold the stainless trim during install no matter how much tape I used to try to hold the trim in place.

Just my 2 cents on my experience. I hope your install goes well.
