Rear Rollpan Questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I purchased a rear Rollpan for my 72' with the Fleetside box from Wes. When mocking up the pan before I weld it in I've noticed a few things. One, I need to trim about 3/16" off of each end for it to fit so I can weld it in. What's the best way to do this? Also, how am I supposed to access the lower bolt on the Tailgate hinges? It seems like I won't be able to get a wrench back behind there to tighten them down once its installed. Any help here would be great.

A cutoff wheel on a die grinder works great for trimming sheet metal. You'll have to cut access holes in your roll pan (large enough to work a wrench) to get to the tailgate trunion bolts. Cut them where they won't be seen (just below the ends of the tailgate) with the tailgate closed. Good luck!

I have a roll pan and I can get the tailgate on and off just fine. Yours must be built a little differently. I can take pics tomorrow if you want.

Also, are you talking about notching the pan on the top or bottom for wrench clearance?

What manufactureer was the pan made by???? I have been looking at getting a SIR MICHAEL'S but just have not ordered it yet..

I believe it is a mark-k pan. There is nothing wrong with the pan itself. I think that the manufacturer made it 67" long that way it can fit a variety of trucks, since I'm sure throughout the years most beds have been dis/reassembled. My gap is 66 5/8". I asked Wes about this and he measured the fleetside boxes on teh trucks he had and came up witha few different measurements. Like he said, its a lot easier to remove metal than have to fil it in.

I went out to take a pic and I really don't have the clearance that I thought I did. It is a tight fit. Not sure I could get the tailgate off very easily at all.

I know this isn't the correct way...but I left off the bottom bolts on the hinge..the roll pan I got from wes need only trimming for the licence plate reccess

Yeah I might end up leaving them off like bigjimzlll did. Like I said, the company makes the rollpans as a universal fit application; some will and some wont need trimming.
