Another A/C question..Retrofitting 88+ A/C - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 93 Chevy parts truck that I just picked up. It has the A/C and heat setup in it still(all under dash). I was looking at that & thinkin' that it looks like it would work in the 71 Sub... Anyone try this as an affordable alternative to runnin somethin like a Vintage Air setup??? I have a complete original A/C setup in the parts sub but I wanted to shave the firewall.

Were you thinking of a dash and firewall transplant? I was sort of wondering if the same thing would work too. There was a truck posted on here a while back that had that done. I thought it was pretty neat.

Actually, I was thinking of just removing the stock heat & A/C unit from the 71, shaving the firewall and installing the 88+CK series Heat & A/C setup. The reasoning is that it would only require two lines running into the firewall and NO BOX OUTSIDE as everything would be contained under the dash. Kinda sorta like a Vintage Air setup in a way, just using GM parts. The controls look like they would fit into the stock control area of the dash if a plate was made for it(aluminum would look nice). The controls are digital too so if you are running like a Dakota digital dash, they would go good together I think....

As far as swappin' the dash, I like the dash in my 71 & would keep it as close to original as possible with a few custom accents but I would want the A/C & heat to come from the stock vents.

I will probably just try it & see how it works out. If it works, I'lle do a tech article on it......

I am going to use an 89 Chevy van as a donor. I got everything junkyard cheap. The van units are compact to begin with so we'll see how it works out in the next few months. Also I want fuel injection ( tbi ) so I grabbed the entire wiring harness. Still haven't figured out what I will do about the instrument panel. Shaving the firewall ?
Would love to see some pics of this.
