hi guys!

sorry to not post in such a long time.... lifes just too busy!

i rebuilt my 2bbl rochester carb for my truck.... and i'm ready to put it back on.....

how would you go about prepping the engine or the carb before i try to start it?

a friend of mine said to just pour gas down the carb to get the engine to fire? is that right?

is there any easy way to get the carb filled with gas without running the battery dry while cranking over the engine?

give me your suggestions!

A little gas down the top of the carb is not a bad idea. It works better if you put a little gas in a spray dispenser bottle and spray it down the carb while someone is inside cranking it. Go easy on the gas....You don't want to spray too much and flood it. Oh Yeah...Forgot to mention.....Don't use a styrofoam cup to hold gas unless you can run really fast.

try to time it before you add gas to the equation, just make sure you have a battery charger on hand

try a boat tank to fill the carb then start the engine, then hook up the actual trucks line

oh thanks! Wow! I NEVER thought I would meet another board member from the Huntington area! Cool! My entire family lives in and around Huntington....

you must live in one of the small towns around Huntington.... like Warren, Majenica, Goblesville, Bippus, Bracken, etc....

in fact, i have plans to be back in Huntington Tuesday.... i'm making a special drive there for a funeral

If its a new engine you need to prime the oiling system and not by turning it over with the started invest or make a good oil pump primer.

oh - no no, its not a new engine.... it was running about 5 minutes before i took the carberetor off....

i just rebuilt the carb, and now i am going to put it back on the engine...

the truck probably sat for three weeks without the carb on it... but i kept the intake covered.....

there is probably still gas in the fuel line, but i didnt know if i would need anything else to get her going....

sounds like i'll probably try the spray bottle if needed, otherwise, i may just crank her over a few times....

When I pulled mine off, I just cranked and pumped till she coughed, then floored it and cranked some more, fired up real quick

the bowl on the carb. will fill in about two revelutions of the engine....no big deal.....
if the battery's that low .....change it....

With dry carb installed, pour about a 1/4 cup of gas down the top of the carb, close the choke and crank it. If tuned well, it will start quickly---couple of cranks. Do not look down the carb to check as it can sometimes flash back due to the rich mix---not sure how you would look bald!!!hehehehe
Not a big deal-----just make sure the carb has it's fuel line on nice and tight with no leaks this time---hehehehe or it's back to fine69's for you!!

I wouldnt mess with pouring gas in the carb, like the others said just start pumping the gas peddle and it should start after a few tries.
I take it your fixing this thing outside?

yes, its outside... but i will wait for a nice warm day to put the carb back on... its under a carport with a cover, so there is less bad weather exposure.... but its still outside...

one thing you might try is pouring some gas through the vent tubes to fill the float bowls.

i was also going to look into replacing the fuel line that i have because the one i have is pretty rusty looking and the nut on the end is very stripped and worn down!

hmmm - another trip to the autoparts store!

Haha I ran outta gas once long ago when I was a young man, I knew I was getting low so I threw the lawn mower gas can in the trunk before I left the house but didn't find a funnel or nothing to get it from can -> tank (old car with the gas fill behind the tag). So I ran out about 1 mile from the house and the only bright idea I had was "hey poke a hole in the bottom of this big styrofoam cup, and pour into that and it comes out the hole into the tank.

Hahaha melted styrofoam all over my hand, no gas in the tank...

Fount a couple of those old glass coke bottles in the ditch, managed to pop the bottom out of one with a crescent wrench and use it like a funnel.

Jewels, just crank it over. The bowl on that dinkey carb hold less than a mouth full. Crank it over 2 or 3 revolutions, then tap the gas pedal a few times, and crank it again.
It'll start. it's a good running engine...I have faith.
If it don't start, then have it towed to Mike's and we'll stay up cussing at it calling it the worst driving POS ever driven.

I ALWAYS pour gas down the carb in this situation. The running engine can fill the carb bowl much faster than cranking it with the battery.
