Rear end interchange

I would like to put a more streetable gear in my 70 C10, something about 3.10.

I don't know that much about the Chevy interchanges, but was wondering what would go in easy.

I have a 6 bolt, but could switch to a 5 bolt if this would help the possibilities.

My Ford 9 inch experience, being so easy to just install a different pumpkin. has spoied me some. Might it be easier to put in a different gear to the existing stock rear? My only problem is getting someone to do it right; I hear it can be a problem. Is this so?

Used rears are going for about $100. Just swap one out, there seems to be plenty in your part of town. New set of gears and bearings run about $250 for the whole shebang, if you install it. Builing a ford 9" is going to be substantially more. Figure $150 for the rear, $250 for the bearing etc., another few hundred to get all the perches and stuff welded on.

A 67-70 coil rear will bolt right in and retain the 6-lug pattern. No modifications neccessary. 3.07 was available in these trucks, and was great for crusing the highways. I have 3.07 gears in my truck and pull 3000 rpms at 75mph, and about 2300 at 60mph with 28" tires.

Look for a 3.07 rear in a original 350 or big-block truck with an auto tranny. Pop off the cover, and look at the ring gear. The number of teeth should be stamped on the ring gear, and 43 14 is 3.07.

I have had bad luck with junkyard rears.....but i think i got one with half a million miles on it or someting. Check for metal particles in the fluid (proably setteled at the bottom), and excess play anywhere.

$150 or less is a fair price for a 3.07 non-posi rear.

Pop the cover and the numbers are stamped on the ring gear

rears

Anybody happen to remember the width of the stock rear for the coil spring trucks, from drum to drum. I ditched mine a long time ago and am considering some new iterations of my truck and just wanting to do some math.

Thanks,

Tom
