New Virus Today (W32/Mydoom@MM)
Normally I would not post this here but I consider you all family and don't want to see any of you get hit by this virus....
McAfee and the other companies released a High-Outbreak alert this afternoon for the W32/Mydoom@MM virus. I believe the last time they sent out this type of alert was the Nachi virus. Here is a link to the latest from Network Associates http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100983.htm Make sure that you take a few minutes and update whatever antivirus software you use to the latest Dat(update files). If you are not sure how to do this then visit the website for whatever software you use. Basically the virus is a mass mailer which goes out and reads you address book and sends email out either from you or from someone in your address book to everyone in your address book and so on.... It contains a file attachment that is 22K in size. It also opens up a port where it can either use it to control your PC or just communicate with Kazaa. McAfee is still determining what it is using the Port for. I will post more updates as I get them.

Not enough macs to bother writing a virus for. You know most of these problems would go away for home users if they did two simple things. Not open stuff from people they don't know. Use a web based e-mail platform and not a POP where your using any Outlook based email IN your personal machine.

My computer is set up to check for Macfee update, every time it starts up. But some times when I read about viruses like this one, I check for updates myself.

Struck wife's computer yesterday
Struck the wifes computer yesterday. Boy was it a pain to get rid of. You have to delete a couple line items in the registry before you're able to delete the files and quaratene the viruses. From what Symnatec says its not suppose to activate until 2/1 and start sending out mass emails. Just watch out...

I got three emails with in 30 minutes from people/email addresses that I have never known. The key thing here is to not open any emails with attachments from people that you don't know. Just delete them. One had a subject line of hello. The other 2 had a subject of HI.

I've already received more than a dozen emails containing this virus today at work. Although they don't affect my machine directly, they are quite a nuisance.
I believe it bears repeating, "Do not open emails from people you don't know". |

gotmud,
Yeah, I'm a computer nerd as well, but it doesn't make it any less irritating. Whatever hit me didn't come through email!! I came home and took the computer out of standby and it was freezing up, so I restarted and it came back like I said before, original config. I found most of my URLs in the support.com folder, but I can't seem to get them to restore.
