windshield is white around the edges
Anyone know of a way to get the cloudy white stuff off of my windshield? Seems the edges have a cloudy white type look to them...for about 2 - 3 inches all the way around.

If you look closely, the white cloudy stuff is under the glass. As far as I know there is no way to get rid of it, you are in need of a new windshield. Around here a frosted windshield like that would be flagged when going through inspection and you would have to have it replaced.

This is normal...the old glass that is sandwiched is seperating and getting foggy looking. Can't really clean it up. I need to replace mine eventually also.

Is it normally a sign that there is rust near the edges of the windshield or is it just from being on the truck for 35 years?

Never know what's under the gasket but the 2 pieces of glass have a thin film between them to keep the glass from shattering and the adhesive is seperating from old age.

Glenn,
Just like 'Pierce' said... that windshield is separating and you need a new one. I just got a new one a few weeks ago and there is a fairly recent thread about pricing. I paid $140.00 for the Pilkington glass, $50.00 for a gasket, and $60.00 for labor. I suggest paying to have it put in... It's a really tight fit and can be a headache. J

Was that for a local person to put it in or are they national and you mail ordered it?

gotmud,
It was a local shop that orders their glass from a supplier. They handled the whole thing. J

Do some shopping around for prices. I bought a new front glass for my 71 4x4 a year ago when it was being painted. New with tint and upper portion shaded was $90 walk in with no insurance deductible. Bought a new gasket when it was on sale from a local vendor for $28, plain rubber w/o trim groove. Had it installed by the paint/body shop as truck was being painted. No pits or dings at all in front glass. Old original had numerous of both with a crack. Shop around and tell glass shop you are paying for it with out insurance deductible.

there is a membrane of plastic in the windshield, when it is turning white like that, water and UV are wrecking the plastic, sounds like your windshield has been in there for quite a while

Hooter from what I can gather from my dad its been in there since new. I kind of like it from a nastalgic standpoint but hate it from a safety standpoint.
