1969 chevy 4x4 1 ton PU
Wondering if someone here can help me with some info on a truck im thinking of buying.
as the title says its a 1969 chevy 4x4, I was told its a 1 ton, my question is this, would this have drum brakes for sure or is it possible it could have disks? it has a 6 cylinder 4 speed combo and i was wondering if anyone has any idea what gear ratio it would have being its a 6 cyl with 4 speed combo? http://www3.telus.net/public/richk777/69chevy4x4 thats a picture of it, hes asking $1600 and says it runs great, i havent actually looked at it yet, but plan to, as i think its a cool truck to fix up.thanks for any tips anyone can give me, ive had blazers before but nothing this old, i had mostly 79's that type of thing. i may be wrong but i dont think a 1 ton 4x4 was available in 67-72

Yep no 1 tons in 67-72 unless it is a napco conversion. More than likely it's a 3/4 ton. If it is original it will have a closed knuckle drum brake front axle and a corporate axle in the rear. Most common ratio was 4.10 but it could have 4.56s.

Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm |

I can agree with that ration in a 4x4. Get it on the road and see what it 'feels' like at top speed. If its 50-55 its 4.56. If higher then it must be 4.10.

oops sorry the other picture is so huge.
thanks for the welcome and thanks for all the responses so quickly.I kinda figured it would have a lower gear ratio being a 6 cylinder and all.I am going to go look at the truck tonight.Is there any way of telling which gears it has by the VIN or any other numbers? I am really interested in checking it out and he says he will cut me a deal with no winch aswell. so....... we will see ive always liked the old chevy 4x4's |

The VIn won't tell you anythign about gearing.
If the option sheet is still in the glove box, then look for an option stating gearing. If there is no option listed, then it was originally equipped with the aformentioned 4.56 gears. meathead and jim are both correct in that no one tons were 4X4's from GM, only after production conversions. Also, that one pictured is not an after production conversion being that it only has an 8 foot bed, the one tons all had the 133 or longer wheelbase dictating a 9 foot step bed, or a 8 1/2 foot fleet bed. no pick up bed came on anything longer than the 133 inch wheel base. |

Welcome to the board from Tennessee.
That truck more than likely has been converted to a 3/4 or 4/4 ton truck with newer suspension and axels. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion, infact I have my original 1/2 ton short bed 4X4 GMC converted over using 3/4 ton axels and suspension from a mid to late 70's 3/4 ton 4X4. I wanted to build a truck that will handle the mud and bigger tires, and not concerned about originality or winning a trophy at a car show. Sound like a good deal to me. |
