Well, The last couple weeks its been pretty hard to get me truck into reverse, i can pull the arm toward me fine, but, pushing up is pretty hard, so last night, it was really hard, and something broke, the handle moves freely (too freely) forwerd and backwerds, is this a problem in the column or tranny? i think its in the column.
69, 3/4 chevy auto, 400tranny

any ideas guys, i have the LMC catalog, so if you know what they call it in that, please tell me that too. thanks alot.

First thing I would do is check the linkage going to the tranny to see if anything is broke.

sounds like you broke the end off the shifter.
pull the pin out and see if the end of the shifter isn`t broke.

If you disconnect the trans linkage at the steering column, can you shift the trans? Hold the tab at the bottom of the column, and have someone shift the lever inside the cab. If the lever moves and the tab doesn't,sounds like you shift tube inside the steering column may have went out?

I had a similar problem with my nova. There is a nut on the ****er shaft on the inside of the tranny that had came loose. All we had to do is pull the pan off and tighten the nut and it was fixed. Of course I would do what OhioDan said first

If your column is hard shifting you probably broke the end off of shift lever as jamie72 said. After you find the prob you need to lube the column top and bottom with WD-40 or something similar to free it up. Good luck John

well, i did disconnect the tranny, and it shifts fine..
Im pretty sure i broke off the end of that damn shifter, soo.. i guess ill need a new one, and will i have to take the column apart, to attach whatever it was back to the shifter? or is just a matter of takin the shifter out, and puttin the new one in the whole, and everything lines up,
I think i just broke the shifter, cause it moves freely back and forth.

just tap the pin out of the shifter,then wiggle the shifter out,use a pair of needle nose and get the broke piece out of the coulm.
lube it the best you can,then reinstall everthing.
it`s easy just remember how it come apart.
