It's COOOOOLD ! ! ! !

Just a quick thing for all my southern friends who might be outside working on their trucks today.

At this very moment (11:15 am), in Winnipeg, it's -35 C (-31 F) with a windchill of -50 C (-58 F). FYI "windchill" is how cold the wind makes it feel - speeds up frost bite.

Anyway, its COLD! Doesn't do too much to dispell the impression some of y'all have of the cold "Great White North", eh?

Oh well, that's what makes us tough or just plain .

Currently -50 F with the windchill, and it is snowing like CRAZY out there!

Without the windchill it is more like -31 F here as well

Funny, all I think of when I think of Winnipeg is 40 C an 100% humidity, lol I was there two years ago when the river was flooding over and the bugs were so bad, I was actually really enjoying the super hot and muggy weather :P

Esspecially when it rained for two days straight with the biggest raindrops I've ever seen in my life. That was the heaviest rainfall I've ever seen, made esspecially nice since Alberta was (and still is) going through a big drought and I hadn't seen rain in months!

Notice how it's only the Canadians with replies so far. My cousin lives in Texas and when it -40 here in Ontario, I was talking to her and she said she had to put the heat on because it was only 48F in Humble Texas. I wish.

-59 that calls for a bottle of Canadian Club and a fireplace. Sure has been cold this Winter. I am close to Thunder Bay, Ontario. It's so cold our Sieberian Husky wants to stay in. But again she'd spoiled.

It's 11:40 PM here in Pittsburg, CA, 52* F, no wind. Our UPS man started wearing shorts today.
Must be tough in the winter up there.

Well it's another cold one this morning, -40 C (-40 F) without the wind. Forcasters are saying it should start moderating tomorrow and should be near normal, -15 C (5 F) by next week - we can only hope...

As for why we stay up here - - - 'cause it's beautiful (back me up here Canucks). This kind of cold is really quite rare. The last time we saw these temps in Winnipeg was 1999, and before that it was 1977 - so this is a little strange for us as well.

One thing I always say, is we get the best of everything. We experience the clean crisp winter for a few months (snowmobiling, skiing, hockey and of course 4-wheelin'), but then we get the beautiful summers when temps can sometimes reach 100 F (humidities all over the scale as well). I think this variety allows us to appreciate and understand pretty much all weather types. We may not experience the extremes of anything, but at least we get a taste of it.....

Or we're all just plain

Right on. It's not cold all the time as some may believe. This is abnormal for sure. Besides it's too damn hard to go ice fishing if the water isn't frozen. Auger hole keeps filling up with water. NO I love it up here where i can hunt moose and deer 15 minutes from hone, go fishing for walleye, bass, northern, and only have to drive less than 5 miles to launch the boat. Prices may be a little more expensive but the scenery and the outdoor activity can't be beat. Oh yeah it's so cols today you have to carry a propane torch with you to thaw out your words so people can hear what your saying.(kidding) I love the North. Where does Santa live?

I'm glad you clarified the fact that you were just kidding. From my experience (watch "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" - CBC) there are those folks out there that might actually believe you....

PS - You forgot to mention the Musky. I've had the thrill of catching three in the last two years at a friends cottage north of Kenora. One 10 pounder in the summer and a couple of smaller ones through the ice last winter. According to my buddy, he's never seen any musky in his lake in all his 40 yrs there. Well, he's got 'em now, and soon he may have nothing but these toothy gators - - suits me just fine.

18F here in Philly at half past 12 AM. It's warmed up in the past couple of days, but nothing compared to what the folks up north are getting.
