MSD Ignition
What kinda gains am I looking at, if I install a basic kit on my 350? Is there a better maker for this than MSD?

I installed the 6A kit. Didn't really see any changes other than better starting. I'm sure at 4500-5500 it will come in handy though.
My Grandfather has had the 6A installed in his wagon sparking a Chevy 350 for almost 10 years now. No problems what so ever. Just checked, 280Kmiles total on the wagon. He installed it 130K ago. |

Can any one explain the difference between the 6A and 6AL in "laymans" terms? I'm no scientist, just wondering the benefit of one over the other.

Rev limiter I Believe. It cuts spark to certain cylinders at certain times so that it doesn't rev past the designated rpm.

The difference between the 6A and 6AL is like said, it has a rev limter. You can set it at whatever you want it by changing the modules. It also has rubber cushions to absorb vibrations where the 6A doesn't. I love mine. I set my rev limiter 500 rpm higher than my shift light so I never have any worries of revving too high.
As far as Jacobs stuff. Junk. I wouldn't run that crap again if they gave it to me, which they don't btw. I got tired of getting stranded with the Jacobs crap. It is real bad about overheating and quits. MSD all the way for me from now on.

MSD is the best, mallory is good too. Jacobs- well I can't find a single person who praises jacobs so far over the years, so thats gota tell you somthing. I put a MSD 6a box and blaster 2 coil [super HEI kit] on my 10:1 385 a couple years ago to replace the POS accel stuff [another comapny that sells JUNK ignition stuff]. Not only did it start easier, but since I had no choke it was very hard to keep running once it fired in the mornings in winter, and after I put the kit on I could fire it up and let it idle until it warmed up. Torque below 3000rpm was deffenatley improved, emissions improved, and I got about 300rpm more of usable power in the upper rev band. This is what a ignition system will do to a hi-po, high compression motor. On a stock 350, its not going to do much of anything.

A good ignition system on a stock motor will help. It will let it start easier and run smoother. IMO, this should be the first thing done to a engine when starting upgrades. No, it won't give you more power from a stock motor, but it will use every bit you do have. If you can fire the plugs consistently and to the max, it is bound to help.
