New User - 59 GMC Suburban Carrier?
(oops! sorry posted this on the 55-59 parts board first) I'll learn!
Hi all I'm a new member. I love reading all the conversations about the late 50's trucks. Very informative! I have a 55 and 56 GMC Suburban Carrier both in need of restoration. Through my research I've read that GMC stopped production of the SC in mid 1958. I recently came upon what the owner professes to be a 59 Suburban Carrier. Does anybody know if this is possible? Thanks!

I'd bet against it!
The serial number would tell you the year. In all the history I have on the 55-59's Chevy only produced 1,425 Cameos in 1958.
Cameo production was cut-off in mid year when they introduced the Fleetside beds. If it is GMC, then I am not positive on when they cut off the Carrier. Again check the serial number. Another thing, Canada had thier own production of GMC and Chevy Trucks too! The Canadian serial numbers are set up differently than the American made trucks! Do some more homework... and let us all know for sure. My two cents worth, rico_bob

Yeah, my first response was, "that's impossible!" The only thing we could come up with was maybe the factory had leftovers!?
If I remember it correctly, according to the S/N it is a 58 or 59 manufactured in Oakland. For 55-60 pickups, GMC identified each year with a letter, unfortunately 58 & 59 both used the letter S! I did notice the S/N indicated it's a LWB (123" instead of 114".) I'm not sure it was even a Suburban originally. Was that an option for Cameos - SWB or LWB frame? I read your identifying details about Cameos (3124, SS bumper and absence of bolt holes in the bed.) GREAT STUFF! I know the GMC S/N doesn't specify the model, but I'm not sure if the other two details pertain to GMC also. Thanks for the reply! I'm still digging and I'll let you know if/when I come up with an answer!!

I was correct
No it was not a Suburban Carrier originally. I caught the tell tale giveaway in the S/N (LWB instead of SWB.) We spoke to a guy here in Florida that has bunches of GMC's and he knows of the truck and remembers when it was modified. Anyway, it's still a nice looking truck!
It was fun digging!!

His name is Ralph Wescott and his contact information can be found on the about us page of www.cameotruckclub.com. You can also take a look at www.oldgmctrucks.com they have a great deal of S/N info or www.1955gmc.com. I'm sure your question will get answered by any of these people.
Good Luck!
