speedo calibration revisited

Mike you helped me before with this , i need help again.

I have 275/60R15 on 15x8 rims. rear is 3.42 gears with a 700R4 tranny.

Problem is, my sppedo cable went out and had to change it, it had been growling anyways. well the the reducer that goes between the tranny and the cable also went out, it froze up and does not turn. Anyways, i took it out and now my speedo is not reading correctly again. The reducer is a 1:.950 part #1565215.
I took t out because it is 95.00 bucks to replace and i said to #e!! with that. Well now i need to recalibrate the speedo again. what gears you think i need ?

Jeff, you really need to know what gears you have now and what sleeve you have. There are two different sleeves. 25512340 works with 34-39 driven gears. 25512339 works with 40-45 driven gears.

If you don't feel like pulling everything before getting the gears, at least pull the driven gear and sleeve to see what part number the sleeve is. Then we can go from there.

I'm in the same boat now. What is this sleeve? While I'm putting the speedo cable in, I need to count the teeth on the drive and driven gear. Right?

Here is the link you need.
http://www.tciauto.com/tech_info/speedo_gears.htm
Just put in the info into the calculator. Just find a combo with that comes close to a whole number.

Shouldn't there be a locking clip on that sleeve? Where can I get one? I guess mine fell off somewhere. I think it looks like a fork that attaches to the tranny housing with a screw.

Mike, How long was your original speedo cable? Mine is about 60" and the part # from your old website is about 10" too short. So, all years aren't the same. Just a heads up for other guys.

Gary,

your cable must go all the way to the tranny. I just went out and measured my old stock cable and it was around 46". My cable has a junction right under the drivers feet instead of going straght to the tranny. Not sure why it does though.

And yes, there should be a piece holding the sleeve in. It is sort of horse shoe looking thing with one bolt holding it on. You might be able to get one at the dealer. Junkyard would have one for sure if you can find a truck with the tranny still in it.

Yeah, all of the computers showed it as a 2 piece cable, but it went from the speedo all the way to the trans. However, the good guys at O'Reilly got me what I need. In case anybody runs into this, the cable needed is a Pioneer CA-3002, $12.00. It's 63" long. Now I just have to get everything re-installed and find that little horseshoe thing and the bolt.
