700r4 in a K5 possible?

ive got a freshly rebuilt 700r4 in my pickup that i decided i cant afford to finish restoring for a few years. weve got a 350TH in the blazer thats just about shot. is it possible to put the 700 in the blazer? i took a look at the transfer case and all that and it looksl ike itd be a pain in the hooha. anybody done it?

The 700r needs to have a new output shaftput in it. Available from Advancedadapters.com

Then you need to decide if you want to move the engine forward 1.75" or if you want to move the transfer case crossmember back 1.75". ( If you move the case member you will need to shorten your rear driveshaft and lengthen the front driveshaft )

Or you could install a transfer case that bolts up to the 700r. In that case I don't know what other modifications you would need to do. Good Luck

thanx for the info. have you or anyone you know actually had any experiences with any of these methods?
wouldnt moving the transfer case also involve moving the shifter? i would think thatd be a pain. so id probly be more interested in moving the engine up instead.

I'm planning on doing this eventually as well. I think it will be quite easy to accomplish. It looks like all that needs to be done is to slide the engine crossmember ahead a couple of inches. The hardest part will be drilling new holes in the frame for the bolts. My fan has a two inch spacer on it that is removeable, so everything should line up pretty good. At least that's what I am hoping anyway

A while back I talked to www.700R4.com about installing a 700R into my 72 blazer. They said that they have done quite a few of these, and they just use the adaptor output shaft, and move the engine forward. I got the impression that it was that simple.

yeah i just found a 700r4 out of a 90 blazer fullsize for 100 bucks I thinking about picking it up

I've got a 700r4 in my blazer. We didn't need to move the engine, I just sent my driveshaft in to be shortened. It works great.

Q, you must not have a 4x4. Otherwise you would have to move your transfer case, shorten one driveshaft and lengthen another, and have a mis-aligned transfercase shifter. It makes more sense to slide the engine a little forward.

700r4

I've got a 700r4 in the Fox. I moved the t-case back and used the output shaft from AdvancedAdapters. I also had 2-piece driveshafts at both ends, so there was no problem. The transmission linkages worked great, but there was a little trouble with the kickdown. But it all was fairly easy.

alright sounds simple enough. were plannin on changing blocks anyway so it should be a breeze. thanx for the input guys

by the way, this AdvancedAdapters.com takes me to a big autoparts search engine, is that what you guys are referring to?

You should see a gas mileage improvement w/ the 700R4. I got an extra 2 MPG when I made the switch on a '75 Blazer a few years ago. However, keep in mind that the 700R4 is a lot more $$$ to rebuild/fix when you break it that the TH350.

I'm getting 9mpg on a good day w/my 383cui+700r4. MPG was better (11mpg) w/a 350/th350 combo, but no guts. Diff gearing would make a MUCH bigger difference.

I didn't realize the 69/70 blazers had a mechanical gas pedal to carb linkage. It might be harder to move the engine forward with that set up. The 71/72 models have a cable so moving the engine forward just under two inches wouldn't affect things too much.

Actually moving the engine forward would make working on the engine much easier. It is so far back against the firewall, that most tasks are difficult, especially with plugs and distributor work.

It is the 383 portion of your example that is hurting your mileage. Keeping everything else apples to apples, the 700r4 will yield better gas mileage that a 350, although the gain is marginal.

I found this website a couple of years ago. Go to the 700R4 link for detailed tranny swap and explanation. Also some other good detailed pages of upgrades.

You might want to bring other ideas to the board from this. ( I just saw on on spraying line-x inside whole blazer) Its been a while since I went through it all and might like to see some of it again.

yeah the only way to get worse gas mileage when switching to a 700 is if you make the shift points rediculously higher, because if im not mistaken, the 700 has the exact same gear ratio through the first 3, with the only difference being the overdrive.

i also agree about the engine being too far back near the firewall, those two inches will definately be appreciated when doin plug/header, and starter work. but we got the old 350/350 out today (with a crushed finger in the process) so now im ready to pull the good stuff outta my pickup

I may be wrong but I was led to believe one of the benefits of the 700 was a lower 1st and 2nd gear. Third being = and of course 4th being a 700 only option

is the t700 different than the 700r4? because i know that the t700 has the features that leinie mentioned but i always heard that the 700r4 and the 350 had equal first three.
clarification anybody?

The 700 has a deeper first gear than the 350's or 400's. Check www.700r4.com for exact ratios.
