whats the deal with these weird notches?
is this a real rare option or a dealer installed set up, this is only the second times ive ever seen these, there is a baby blue 68 short fleet 2wd in my town with them in the box and then i saw this e bay post and noticed this 4x4 had them, where do they come from?

These "notches" are a Chevrolet "Side Panel Step Unit". An add-on accessory that was available from the dealer, the part number is 986838. Hope this answers your question.

I wonder if that is the new part number...the number I have listed is 988423, with a recomended list of about 10 bucks each.
This item was introduced in 58 or 59, and this was to give you a place to stand to load up the bed, since the steps on a step side were actually used back in the day. The step came with mounting hardware and a template to show where to cut so the bed side wouldn't flex from your body weight. |

If my memory serves me, the last one I saw on ebay had a $25 buy it now, and it never hit it; ended up going for around $10-15. Looks kinda weird, but still cool to see the dealer parts like that come up for sale.
