Distributor lockout

It was suggested to me that I lock out the vacuum advance on my distributor due to the size of my cam. How would I go about doing this? Is this the same as putting in a curve kit? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

what kind of distributor? On my MSD it came with a lock out do-hickey. When I locked it out it really helped performance and drivability. I also limited my mechanical advance to 14º. This way I can set the intial timing to 20-22º(helps idle) and it wont over advance when at full advance.

So do all distrubuter's have this? What exactly is it? Does it just advance the timing? Would a recurve kit take its place? And does it help performance?

Mine is an Accel dist. with the supercoil cap/coil setup. I just was wondering if the lockout and curve kit were one in the same. Should I switch out my vacuum advance module with a mechanical one?

Recurve doesn't have anything to do with lockout. Alot of engines benefit from limiting total advance by either welding the slot closed in the distrib or by a stop of some sort. I have seen articles at hotrod /carcraft/chevy hi po about this. I you really want to just bypass the vacuum advance just unplug it and cap the ports. Vaccum advance is used primary at idle/low speed if I remember correctly.

the only problem with capping off the cannister is that the cannister mechanism will still allow the plate to move some..making the timing a little errattic
