Purpose of Heat Risers

What is the purpose of the heat risers that are located where the exhaust pipe attaches to the manifold?

Mine are missing. Is this a problem?

if I'm not mistaken, there usually on one side and it restricts the exhaust when the vehicle is cold, and the exhaust runs through the intake manifold over to the other exhaust manifold instead to help warn it up, I stand to be corrected

Not in calipornia its not. When the engine is cold the riser will close some so as to retain more heat in the motor. Its not a problem in a warm climate.

I took out the innards of the heat risers on my old '80,'82,'83,and'85. Your truck will eventually warm up.

Adding weight, making noise, freezing up, but they were intended to help with keeping heat when it was cold out, so that more heat could be utilized with the factory aircleaner. (Dump EM)
