I don't know how safe it is but I had a friend run 305's on his 8" rim. Be we mostly all ran 295's. I've got 275's. I heard that theh wider the tire it is the easier it will pop of the rim if you've got any lateral pressures on the truck, like turning corners or pull $hit hooks on gravel roads and such... or so I've heard.

Well, it is recommended not to go over 10", but GM put 275/60/15 (as do I) on their 454SS rims. So you should be ok. Any more and you are going to be getting irregular tire wear.

305 will fit..barely. Better get a 10" wide rim. 305 (and 295s) on an 8 inch rim make for balloon like tires. If you do it get the ones with the 60 aspect ratio, the taller side walls will give some more leeway and a better contact patch.

yep, i wouldn't go any wider than what i think you already have, 275/60/15. any wider and it will look dumb and you will probly get less traction than with the 275's.

275's work fine, but if you want the longest lasting, best tread wear, 255's work best.

You can fit a 295 on an 8" wide wheel without a problem.
But I wouldnt go any larger then 295 on an 8" wide wheel. I have 295's on my 8" up front and 295's on the 10" out back.
