Help with TV adjustment..I think
I just finished putting in a good used 700R4 in my truck and it doesn't seem to be shifting into overdrive. Does this mean the TV cable might be out of adjustment? I've heard some of you talk about this. Could someone explain how to check this? Thanks as always.
Mike

Does it shift normally? Does it shift three times? If so, it's going into overdrive, just not locking up. Did you follow the instructions at 73-87.com?
http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/tvcable.htm Did you wire the lockup converter? http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/lockup.htm How does it shift? Hard, soft, slow, soon, late?

I agree, I bet the converter isnt locking up. 700R4's are useless without the converter lockup working.
if you're sure you have the gear selector in 4th (OD), get up to speed around 60 or 70mph and manually shift it into 3rd, you should feel it.. if not, well something must be askew mike |

yes it is shifting three times. Seems to shift smoothly.Would I need to rewire the lock up if the truck originally had a 700r in it?

No, you shouldn't have to. I thought you had swapped over to a 700R4. Is everything hooked up the same? Do you have a tach?
Try this. When going down the road in OD, at speeds above say 45 mph, steady, lightly press the brake pedal. If it's locked, you should feel it unllock. It will be hard to feel, but it's like you are going in a very slightly lower gear. It's not but about a 200 rpm change. It's possible something is wrong with one of the switches that controls the lockup function. Did your old tranny lockup? Mike |

Well,
I just took the truck out again to be sure. I did a few of the things you guys suggested and I guess it is working correctly. It shifts from D to OD into fourth and kicks down when I climb a hill. I guess it just seems to shift a lot more subtly than the old one and at a little higher rpm. But I did see the changes on the tach. So, I think everything is working correctly. Just a little bit differently. I guess driving the VW Jetta for the past three weeks while it was in the shop made me forget what driving the truck was like :D

Good deal.
Oh, I suggest making sure you have the TV cable adjusted correctly. If not and it's off by much, it may kill this tranny too. 700R4's are real finicky about this. Use the link above to check it. Where, in normal driving do you feel it lock? Should be around 40-45 mph. Last edited by swervin ervin; 02-14-2004 at 02:49 AM. |
