msd or mallory distributor?
okay, i'm trying to pick out my ignition stuff.
i could go the cheaper route and get the mallor HEI for around $160 or do what i really want to do and get the msd pro-billet street for around $190. the only catch to the msd one is that i would have to spend money on getting an external coil($30) and one of there ignition boxes($190 for 6AL). i plan on getting the 6AL box anyway no matter what. |

You could always have your current HEI rebuilt and recurved...for less than half the cost of the two you mentioned.
I did that with a $10 JY HEI I purchased for Yeller years ago when I had the 350 in it (converted from points to HEI). Never had a problem with it, and the engine was producing some good power.

What's wrong in getting the MSD Pro-Billet HEI? You can add the 6AL with it later if money is tight. If you're going to spend money like you have so far, why stop?

There's not but one ignition manufacturer in my opinion. MSD.
Since you are wanting the best stuff and are building a very nice engine, don't scrimp on the ignition part of it. This is one of the most important parts of the whole system. I would most definetely go with MSD and never look back. The quality of the stuff they make is second to none. How many have you heard say they have Mallory stuff? There is no better advertisment for a product than from people who try the product. This was a big part of the decision of me buying MSD stuff.

I go with only MSD components, but I use GM HEI's and add MSD stuff.

What MSD stuff can you add? How do you recurve an HEI? And how could you change the coil? Do you just get a new coil and distributer cap?

As far as the coil goes, it is in the cap. There are 4 little screws on top of the distributor cap that hold on a cover over the coil. Simply remove the screws, take off the cover, replace old coil with high voltage coil, and wola. No need to even change cap unless it is in need of replacement.
