Talking Tranny shift question - 4L60E

Hey gang, I'm from the 73-87 truck forum and need some info for my brother.
He has a '94 4.3 V6 4L60E(I'm guessing) tranny in his truck. You know the electronic version of the 700R4.

While returning from a long trip yesterday, we stopped to check is really cool '67 F##d. Hey it looked really cool, plus it has a bored block to 427!! Okay back to the problem. My brother shifts his truck into reverse and "OD" and it does not move. He had to raise the RMP level moderately to get it to move. Once we got it on the highway the tranny shifted into OD for the drive home. Before we get home, there are plenty of stop lights to go through. Now at every light the truck shifts normally. Get home, I get out of my truck to move my other truck out of his driveway. After waiting for me to move my truck, he waits and then proceeds to drive up and the tranny acts up again. This morning the truck would not even move either. He is thinking of changing the 1/2 3/4 selonoids. Would this be a something to try? Should the computer give any codes if the tranny is bad? Any suggestions on trouble shooting? He is a really good mechanic so any kind of troubleshooting is no problem. If he needs to have it rebuilt then he will pull it himself. Not cheap to rebuild either $1200 to $1500!!!
