Lookin' for more info !

Hi just stumbled across this site as I was lookin' for more info on our 1971 GMC 3/4 ton 4X4. We are the 3rd original owner and since we have had it we have found some pretty interesting stuff which I am trying to research.

First it has a one ton Rockwell rear-end

it has one ton spring suspension

extra large hubs (caps have to be special ordered)

and a few extra's, but the story we have gotten so far is that only a limited number were made and sent to Alaska for work on the pipeline in the 70's. I am trying to find out the whole story and if there is any merit to what we know.
So my question is this, do you know of any research options that would be available to look up the history on our ole' girl. She is currently in "project mode" but here is a picture of it , thought you might like to look! I can tell ya she is a workhorse that has put many a man to shame,,it just doesn't know how to quit.

Thanks in Advance
Bill

Good lookin truck. If there is a way to research it there should be someone here who knows how.Looks like an interesting rig.Could it possibly be an aftermarket conversion?

No, not a aftermarket conversion, it's came like that from the factory 'cept of course the tires and wheels. It also has disc brakes that are oversized width,,again special order part, it's a factory job that's supposed to have something to do with the special order series that were sent to Alaska. Thanks for the compliment, she aint quite were she needs to be but were working on it.

First welcome to the best truck board on the web.
The glove box data sheet would be the first place to start.
If it was ordered from Gm it will have a code that would point to that. It may also have codes that point to special ordered items.
These are commonly refered to as DSO Dealer Supplied Options.
Take a pic of the Glovebox data sheet and post it for the experts to decipher.
You can also date the axles with the code on the tubes.
Some folks have found build sheets in the springs under the seat and behind the fuel tanks, it might be worth a look.
I was in Alaska in the 70's when the pipeline was being built and saw a lot of heavy duty stuff that I have not seen since.
Back in the 70's dealers would do just about anything you wanted to sell a vehicle.

Can you post a pic of the rear axle and a pic of the hubs on both axles?
