transporting a pickup bed

I bought a pickup bed and will have to drive 1000 miles home. I am trying to come up with a way of transporting it w/o having to use a trailer. I was thinking about c-clamping the truck rails together. If I were to do this, is a '97 truck bed as wide as '72 bed? Does anyone know how reliable this is? What other ways have you guys come up with? Thanks

You can flip the 72 bed upside down on the other one. You might be able to put some wood in the stake holes of your 97, then flip the 72 on on top and slide it's stake hole onto the wood stakes in the 97. I'b put some carpet or woob between the beds so your 97 does not get to scratched up

Use lots of tie down. Rope or whatever, don't take a chance.

I used my 96 to carry several beds that way. This was just a short trip, so I wasn't as carefull as I probably should have been.

transporting bed

Works just the way you said.If to wide take three 1/6 or 2/4s and clampacross bed and flip bed your hauling over so top rails lay on the boards and clamp to them.Works great Ive done it many times.Use foam or some kind of padding to keep from scratching what you don't want damage.Good luck

Can anyone tell me how wide a 67-72 bed is? Also, my '97 is a short bed. My '72 is LWB. Do you guys think it will be safe if the 72 hangs over a couple feet?

transporting bed

A friend (71'on20's) and i just went to south carolina from ohio to big oranges home(849 miles) to pick up a short bed for his project 71' and i have a 97' crew cab dually. We used my 18' car trailer to pick it up. There is no way i would take a chance of hauling on the back of my truck going down the freeway at 60+ mph. I think you would have better piece of mind if you use a trailer. I think it would be a lot easier on your nerves. Thats a lot of miles to travel wondering if it is safe and secure. Hope this helps.

I picked up a long bed a few weeks ago and drove it four hours. Easiest way I found was to drive the truck it is going on. I went up there bedless, and came back beded.

If the bed is clamped or bolted to the truck, then it is just as safe as a snug top. Flip the be upside down, drill holes and bolt it, or use C-clamps in 4 points minimum, and haul @ss.
