Question C20 Dually Conversion

I am wanting to convert my 1967 ¾ ton rear axle to dually wheels for my flatbed. I read several threads that discuss this topic and say that no adapter is required as long as I have the smaller 8-lug drums.

So I called southwestwheel.com and ordered one dually wheel to test it out…

(F029587 2000-76 Dual – Base 16x6 8-6.5)

Turns out that the wheel hub hole is maybe 1/32” too small! There is a small shoulder right before the drum where the hub gets slightly larger. The new dually rim just stops short of being able to go up over this shoulder. Other than that, it looks like it would work fine.

Obviously I have the wrong wheel, but where do I get one that fits?

Ideas?

Thanks!!!

The rims I put on my 72 C30 had the years 1976-2000 on the carton. It looks like it's the same wheel as yours. Measure the hub diameter on your wheel. If it is 4-5/8" it should work.

Interesting...

When I measure the hole on the old single wheel and the new dually wheel, they are almost exactly the same. I have to start counting the 32's to tell much of a difference. Yes, it's in the 4-5/8" ball park, but different enough not to seat back over the shoulder. I've tried cleaning and greasing the shoulder, no way it's going on.

So I cut a small strip of metal to friction fit into the hub hole of my old rim to test the size, easier to measure that way. I cannot fit the metal strip into the hole of the new wheel, it's too large by about 1/16-1/32".

Just spoke with southwestwheel, the wheel I ordered (they recommended) has a center bore of 4.56". There is another wheel, part# F029588 that has a center bore of 4.6".

Think I'm going to buy a caliper and measure to make sure but it sounds like this might be the solution.

Thanks

Kingsville, MO! thats just a stones throw away from me! welcome to the board. I am going to do the same to my 67 C-20, so let me know what you finally do. I've considerd looking at bone yards for a set of duallys.
