Unhappy my truck died

i was driving my truck out of the welding shop today after school(i am fabricating a hidden hitch to go behind my roll pan, i'll have pics when it is finished) and the motor started running rough and then died and it will not start. any ideas on what might cause this? i'm not going to be fixing it because it is still on warranty but the shop probably won't know until friday and was just curious about what might be going on.

Could be a fuel pump or filter.

Sounds like a fuel problem. My truck ran identical to that the 2 times I ran out of gas (stupid fuel gage).

the fuel pump(Holly 120gph) has only been on a few months and if it was a filter wouldn't it be running bad before because it had plenty of power when i was driving it to welding?

try adding gas...my truck's gauge said i had 1/8 tank left and it died right when i was traveling down a very busy 2 laned state route at dinner rush, and it ran rough for a few seconds before it quit.
oh boy, i have never seen so many middle fingers in my life.

Did they disconnect your battery cables when welding on the frame.

i got it back from the shop today and the problem turned out to be a bad fuel pump which is irritating because the bump was only a few months old but at least it is running again so i can go

Just an observation.
You said that your truck was under warranty?
So it's a newer truck?
If It is a newer truck, remember to unhook the battery when welding on the truck, or you could fry / or do some serious damage to the electronics / computers.

Maybe I'm off track here.

EDIT: Ok. I read closer. You have a 71 Chevy.
Whats under warranty? The motor?

the truck is a '71 and i just had the motor built last summer and it has a 12 month/12000 mile warranty on it but i had to pay for the pump because it wasn't replaced when the motor was built

imdarren: you can weld on cars with computers, i have seen it done many of times. to me i am not sure what is better to disconnect the battery or to keep it connected. i know if you have a computer controled car and disconnect the alt. that the comp will be fried. the battery controls voltage spikes from going to the computer. i am not saying your wrong just that i have seen it done and the comp was fine..... maybe someone has strong evidance on what way is the best

I would disconnect the battery when welding on any vehicle! JMO, but I've done it on both computer controlled and non-computer controlled. I feel it safer to do it. Welding, as we know, takes a lot of current. And the more resistance you have (air), the higher the voltage needs to be to make the same amount of current. So the voltage is high. Even though current takes the path of least resistance (it going straight to your ground) I would still be afraid of a little bit going somewhere else on the frame of my truck, to something that I don't want to get voltage.

71Rat, what do you do when the alt goes bad?! Do you mean while the vehicle is running?
