Rear axle interchangeability?
OK, its been 4 years since I swapped complete front ends from 1970 drum to 1971 discs. As many of you know thats also a swap from 6 lug to 5 lug. So whats the deal on getting 5 lug in the rear? Can I use axles from a '71, '72 or later or will I have to get an entire rear end from a later year truck? Current gear ratio is 3.07, coil spring susp.

as far as I know Al, the axles were shorter in 67 only. 60-72 should work just fine

1970 trucks could have the longer axles like the 71-2's or the axles could be the shorter ones like the 67-69's. If you have the longer axles, it is a straight forward swap, (axle for axle). Otherwise change the rearend, redrill your axles or use spacers on the longer axles.
I believe the longer axle rear end is 57 3/4" between the backing plates. The shorter one is 56 1/2". I would suggest measuring so you know what your options are. Jim |

If you want to pay for them, Early Classic offers a set of axles with 5lug pattern.

I have read on the board that some people are using a spacer between the axle and the flange to make up the distance. I have never seen it done, but I wouldnt think it were impossible.

JimKshortstep4x4 hit it on the head, 67-69 is one length, 71-2 is another length and a '70 could have been either. Hope this helps.........Jerry

My 70 had the longer ones and I got some out of a 77 PU with a 12 bolt.
