ticking in engine
Ok guys my engine has been built for about 4 1/2 years now and it has had a ticking noise ever since it was built. I think I figured out what it is but wanted yalls opinion. The engine has vortec heads and when i built it i did not know that you had to have the valve guide bosses milled for higher lift cams, I just changed out the springs. Could the springs be getting in coil bind and making the ticking noise. It sounds like it is on the topside of the engine and I have changed out the lifters once thinking it was them making the noise.

If you're engine was experiencing coil bind, I would think you would have had a bent pushrod within 4 1/2 years. I believe that the valve guide itself is what needs to me machined down, but the retainer hitting it would result in the same result. Does it sound like just one valve, lifter combination makeing noise or are all 16 rattling? Does it change with temperature, speed etc?

it sounds like all the lifters are bad to me but i've changed them all out. The noise varies with the engine speed. Do you think that maybe the pushrods could be rubbing on the cylinder head and making the noise? The noise is there all the time regardless of temperature especially at startup, it gets a little quieter after it idles a little.

Yes I adjusted the valves with the engine running.
