Brake Shoe Quality
I have a 69 C10 SWB P/U. Was looking at my
front brake shoes recently and noticed several small hairline cracks in the brake material and began to wonder about the quality of the shoes. OK...I admit it...I bought'em at AutoZone. So what brand shoes do you guys buy and where do you buy'em? Jim Mt Juliet |

I always buy bendix brakes. They are a little more money, but they are some of the best brake pads out there. The reason is because Bendix was used on car/trucks many years ago from the factory. This has allowed them to test and refine there product over time, where other companies arn't able to do that.

Me too. Bendix are best. They are a little more money, but what is the price on being able to stop?

I usually buy Wagner at O'Reiley's. There are more money than the others but they are a lot quieter than the cheaper ones. I bought the cheap shoes for the rear of my 86 pickup and after about a month it sounded like a semi when you got on the brakes. I figure if I'm going to the time and trouble I will use the best ones.

Hopefully they will be getting better. I used to get longitudinal cracks in shoes as well. Up until a few years ago they were rebuilding them, ie. you buy shoes and pay an additional 6 bucks (Cdn) core charge. Bring in the old ones and get your $6 back. But they did away with that because its cheaper to build them from scratch rather than rebuild old ones. When I had drums all round I usually ended up replacing all 4 sets of shoes every year. Now w/ front discs, the wear on the rear shoes is minimal, they last MUCH longer.

In addition to Bendix and Wagner, I would also add Raybestos...
Bob Adler did a couple articles in This Old Truck (Vintage Truck) magazine and mentioned that the side of the friction material should have a DOT "FF" stamp on it to meet current standards and technology. |

Someone on the board is using Praise Dyno brake brand.Whoever it is swears by them but they are a bit $$$$$.I have heard good things about them but I think they are about $275 .00 a set for our trucks. You should be able to find them thru a web search.
