anybody make smooth cowl covers? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'd like to have one that's been smoothed with no leaf catcher/vents. Anybody know of any aftermarket ones...or have one for sale?

They're not made aftermarket as far as I know, your best bet is make your own, you have the risk of buying somebody else messed up project that didn't turn out as good as they expected.

Do a search, there's a couple of threads where board members made their own, not real hard to do.

I plan in doing my own.

I have heard people saying that they have experienced cooling problems when they have done away with those vents. Just something to think about

From what I've seen it is designed to provide air to the side vents under the dash - Everything else motor related is sealed off.

It supplies air to your heater/ac vents. If you cover it you will not have any fresh air going into the cab.

67FSD is correct.... but, if you run aftermarket a/c or don't mind rolling the windows down it shouldn't be a problem.

One word of caution: when getting one welded up, keep it bolted to a cab to limit distortion.

I had a cowl smoothed and they screwed it up bad, I went to put it on the truck and it was straight.. I got one side down and then the other was like 2" high.. I had to toss it.. Make sure they do the majority on the truck if possible.

I seen a chromed smooth cowl on a truck once but not sure where he got it from. It was aftermarket though.

i got a quick and easy idea. Get a blazer , smooth the cowl and take the top so you won't have to worry about fresh air getting inside. I'm going to smooth the cowl out on mine, i was also tipped off about keeping it bolted to the cab of the truck while working on it.

Sounds like people who welded these didn't set up a jig to help control the warpage....or tried to weld to much rather than tack welding....
