Cuttting springs...

My friend doesn't have any money for new springs and wants to know how many coils to cut off of his front and rear suspension on his 68 1/2 ton to drop the front 2 inches and the rear I think he wants like 3 or 4. Anyone know how many coils to cut? Thanks

Douglas.

I think that if you cut one round out of the front springs it will lower it 2". But I don't think you can cut your rear springs.

The rears CAN be cut.... but only if your willing to do more mods to make it work. Many years ago, my HS buddy cut his & spotwelded them to the trailing arms. I didn't trust that method (although he had zero problems over the years he owned the truck), so I had a guy I worked w/fab up some shallow buckets for the spring to 'seat' in & prevent movement. The 'buckets' bolted in the factory hole on the trailing arm & the cut spring fit into the bucket (very similar to how the front coils seat in the lower control arm, & it was about 3/4 - 1" tall).

As for how much to cut, take 1 coil off for about a 3" drop in ride height for original 30+yr old springs. Don't trim too much.... you can't add it back. So trim 1/2, or 1 coil @ a time & remember the ride will get much stiffer the shorter the coil gets.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Like Scoti said, cut one coil for 3 inches. 3/4 coil will drop it 2 inches.
