Unhappy I am totally ****ed....

I'm 17. Messing around driving with some friends. Driving in my mothers 1997 Buick LeSabre Limited. The motor started missing terribly after high RPM usage. After being shut off, it just clicks like it is locked up. I'm guessing a head gasket, with water in the cylinder. Any ideas? My parents are pissed, they took my car, my dirtbike, my phone, my transportation from friends, my job, everything....I can fix the car tomorrow if it is just a head gasket, but i need more ideas. I don't want to tear it down if thats not it. Everyone, please help me...

dont mean to piss anyone off, but am i reading this right, and your mad they took your stuff when you were misusing there car, and screwed up the engine? or are you mad at yourself for doing it and disappointing your parents?

EDIT: btw, the clicking can be caused by a startor or battery... when our 97 ford blew the head gasket it started clicking, so we put a new battery in it, and it got to where it would start again and miss, so i would say you need a battery and head gasket, battery MAY still be all right (ours just coincedently died at the same time)

Read again Josh His parents are mad. I don't think it's a head gasket if the engine is locked up. By "locked" do you mean that you can't turn it at all, even with a breaker bar? Doesn't sound like a head gasket, you may need a new engine.

yes randy, but the title says he is pissed (unless im reading that title wrong and its supposed to be f-ked, thats what i hate about censorship) :p on our 97 ford when the head gasket went it filled the engine with water, so that made it not able to turn over, if you turned it long enough you could push it all out the tailpipe and if you ran it daily it would run good, so he ran it for a week everywhere he went and traded it to his dually

pull the spark plugs and see if any water comes out. if not, see if the engine will turn over with the plugs out.

If you were using someone else's car there should have been no high RPM usage. Sounds like total disregard for the vehicle and the person who owned it. You should pay for the repairs.

68c10owner has the right idea! I think he's right, it sounds to me likr the motor is water locked! pull all the plugs out and pray that the engine turns over!!! if it doesn't then you plobablly bent a rod when it water locked. (note: this is only if you did happen to blow the head gasket) but thats just my .02 cents

Just on the brighter side -- a dead alternator can also cause exactly those symptoms! As the voltage decreases the car starts running worse and worse, and then will only energize the solenoid -- won't start.

Check the easy (cheap) stuff first! What does the battery read?

We tried jumpstarting it. It will only click, but we got it to turn over a couple revolutions one time. The radiator is almost empty, and I know it was full when I left the house this morning. I will pull the plugs and see whats up. I plan on taking the heads off and putting head gaskets in today and tonight and tomorrow and however long it takes me until the job is done. And by the way, I'm totally f-ed, not pissed. They have every right to be mad. They told me a thousand times to be extremely careful with it, but I don't listen. I'm a frickin idiot and I am gonna pay for what I did...

BTW, the '72 will most likely have to be sold to pay for this car...

IMO... everyone has the right to f**k up every now and then... how many of us haven't screwed up one of our parents' vehicles, or at least tried to...

Sounds to me like this kid is doing his level best to make good...

in a few years his parents will laugh about it... and so will he...

Some of you are probably thinking, there's a guy who messed up his parents' car, and ya, I did... a few of them actually... and guess what, they're not mad anymore...

At least no one got hurt!

I'm not going to knock you because I was doing the same type of thing when I was 17. Maybe your parents are upset because if you were driving that fast with you friends what could have happened if you were in a wreck. Hey...I want you around as a 67-72 truck owner and driver!!!

Food for thought...If you were driving at a high RPM and it won't start...see if you can get the motor to turn over by jumping it...If it cranks at least it is frozen up. How about a timing belt?
At least an engine cam be replaced.

I screwed up the engine in my dads Beetle when I was about 18, trying to keep up with some friends in faster cars, OK so I had 5 people in it, but it was partly the old mans fault cos it had a slipping clutch that I had told him about, but would he listen? Took him a tank of fuel and about a gallon of oil to get to work the next day, had to have a rebuild! Boy was I grounded until I bought my own car!

Thanks for the ideas guys. I am going to pick up the car right now to start working on it. My parents no longer want the car, they would rather have the "$7,500" that they think it's worth...it's a 1997 car with 200k miles. Looks like I'm not going to tech school next year...it's okay though. Hopefully I will have enough money saved to attend the year after that. Live and learn...

Well dude, i feel sorry for you, but being young myself i know how it feels to really f&@k up like that. I think them wanting $7500 for a car with 200k miles on it is a little extreme, but you should fix the car for them instead. If all else fails you may want to think about replacing the motor, possibly finding a low-mileage salvage yard engine if you can and installing it (with a warranty of some sort of course, don't want to put in a junk motor).

Anyway, good luck, you have learned a valuable lesson, and in a few years you will be laughing about it

7500 for a 200 k mile car is wayyy overpriced... You could build them an engine that could easily run a 10 second quarter mile for that much, lol. If you ask me, build them a new stock carbon copy motor, and send it right back over to them. Shouldn't cost you more than 2500 if you have to replace the whole rotating assembly, and the heads. The rest of the parts should be alright if it was high RPMs that killed it.

sorry about that man just read ya wrong. at least you are trying to make it right, but i agree, $7500 is WAY to much for that. maybe if it was a 97 chevy truck with a diesel with 200K, but i cant see many other 7 year old vehicles being worth that.

i'd say offer to have a new crate motor installed by a professional shop that way they could have their car back in 10-12days
as far as you rebuilding it or fixing it up i'd say quit while your ahead you've already fixed it BUT GOOD

I remember being 17 - I didn't make all the best decisions, but I am a good person (then and now) I think it is crap that they want $7500 from you to make it right! Also- I would NEVER ask for money from my kid if it was going to keep him from Tech school or College!!!
I think you should replace the engine (they will get a BETTER car in return- at least better than the 200,000 mile engine they had before it blew) Once you replace the engine THEY can either keep the car or sell it (and try to get $7500!) All YOU should be responsible for is to fix your mistake....a blown engine! Not pay them all that money!
Good luck to you and PLEASE go on to school and don't wait a year....I speak from experience- once you take time off school/college you will find a job and start having bills and it will be all the harder to go back. Parents should NOT hinder their kids from going on to bigger and better things!! Hang in there!

Hes 17 and sacraficing school to fix a car. Doesnt add up to me. Yah i would be hard on him, but i dont agree with how they are doing it. I can say about everyone has been there done that, i was just more careful.

On a side note, must have been up in the redline to pop a head gasket. But take the plugs out and crank it. See its not froze, now see which side it comes from and thats the head you need to take off.
