timing w/a light

ok call me stupid but i dont know how to tune an engine with a light. ive always just timed it by ear to where it ran the best, but they dont always like to start up at that point. can anyone step by step explain how you do it with an adyustable light.

Way i do mine is remove the vaccum advance off the distributor and use the air cleaner stud to plug it then put the test lead off the light on the number one spark plug wire

Hook the red and black leads to hot and ground on the battery and depending on where your timing mark is point it at it and set it from 6-10 depending on what kinda engine combo you got i normally start off with 6 and go from there

Yup, what he said, and if it's fighting the starter you have too much advance - 'course, you probably already knew that. Also, make sure your advance is working and not stuck on full advance like mine was after the engine rebuild!

A good timing light is a must Ive recently got me a snap on Nice light but i cant say it does any better than the sunpro i replaced it with.
