Header clearance question?
My SWB 71' 350 V8 has 3 on the tree, which will be changed at some point to auto. The engine is out while the truck is at the paint shop. I'm cleaning re-painting and adding chrome goodies to the engine and I have a set ceramic coated headers for the truck. My question is: Will I run into any problems with the headers clearing on the drivers or linkage side? If it is a problem what can I do to make the headers fit?
Thanks

Are these headers for a small block automatic truck?

It's not the headers you have to worry about. Its the collector pipe that needs to get around the auto tranny mount (assuming you're running dual exhaust). Shouldn't have any trouble with the headers. Well, I didn't on my 83 w/power everything & I'm running plain jane headers. If you still have the y pipe, then I have no idea. Hope this helps.
Longhorn Man: I liked your website. Great info & presentation! Todd

I put headers on a v-8 three on the tree, and had to modify the Z-bar. It would hit one of the tubes when you pushed the clutch in. So i cut it off and welded it on where i needed it.

I apologize in advance
Old4Chev4X4-
So I said to my wife: Whatsa Z-Bar? She replied, "A place in France where you go for drinks." Yet I love her anyway. But seriously, is that a 4x4 thing? My conversion was E-Z. All I bought was extra hangers & gaskets. No weldin', no nuttin. I do have a set of collectors that I'm told fit a 4x4, but they look the same as my 4x2 set. -Todd

The Z bar is the mechanical clutch linkage, where the rods have a linkage on the frame.
If you have an automatic, then you won't have the Z bar. |

As far as the question goes, it really depends on the header itself. I have used Hooker Comps on a small block and 3 speed and it worked well. I did have to install the header first and then slip the z bar through the header tubes afterward, but once in place, it worked perfectly. Also, the Hooker headers nestled perfectly in underneath the crossmember without hitting anything. It was completely painless. I can only vouch for Hooker though, depending on which brand you have, your results may vary.

The headers I have that are in question are the Summit brand that are repackaged DynoMax. They say the are made to fit 67-72 trucks.

The headers that gave me the problem were Blackjack headers on a 2WD 1/2 ton.
I wouldn't buy them again. They always leaked at the head no matter how many gaskets you used. I had to take them off and fly cut the sealing surface. I also had to slot some of the bolt holes at the head. Randy

headers, yes no?
Is it worth it to do headers? Whats the life of them (leak free).
I suppose it depends on use, for a truck I actually drive, in any conditions I wonder if they'd rust away, I hear they leak in lotsa places before long and can't keep the bolts tight. Maybe they are just for blacktop runnin summer trucks?
