Its here, now do I have the guts to do it...lol

My underdrive unit showed up today. Now I have to figure out if I really am going to go through with this I have my hands full with getting the burb ready for paint.

It looks pretty straight forward, besides shortening or getting a new driveshaft.

If I do deside to install it, I would like to do it before I take my 4 week cross country trip in May. Sure will help tow my travel trailer up those mountains. It will turn that 3.08 into a 3.85 ratio when I need it.

What to do, what to do......

It would be the same idea as a truck with a 2 speed rear end. You have a total of 6 speeds that could be used. You obviously would not use all of them, but they are there.

I know I'd use all of them!

Krazy, it works like an overdrive for all 3 (or 4) gears, so you've got 1st, 1st with OD, 2nd, 2nd with OD, 3rd, 3rd with OD, etc.

Dumb questions(s).....

Does that go right off your transmission kinda like a xfer case? Won't that put a lot of extra torque on your drive shaft?

It must shift with a solenoid? (Electrically?)

Looks like a pretty cool thing.

Shortymac83- your right except, it's an underdrive not an overdrive. It's like Low first gear, first, Low 2nd gear, 2nd, Low 3rd gear, 3rd ect.

Ya I've been wanting somthing simalier, but I want OD instead of underdrive, because I allready have the tall gears! What I'm really wanting is the factory OD unit!

New they cost about $2400. If you shop around, you can find a used one for quite a bit less.

This one is setup for a turbo 400. It will take the place of tail cone on the trans. There are different tail cones that can be exchanged so it can be used with other transmission. This is an UNDERDRIVE unit, so it is the opposite of an overdrive unit. I already have 3.08 gears and get close to 20 mpg, so an overdrive unit would not really help me that much. This is to help me while I am pulling. It would be the same as me having 3.85 gears to pull, and the 3.08 gear to cruise.

When I first got my burb about 4 years ago, I was gettinga bout 10 mpg. It has been like a game to see how I can increase the mpg

My latest change was to put a 50,000 volt coil and gap the plugs at 60. It was only a week ago, but it seems like I have picked up abut 1.5 mpg.
