I am putting it in a 68 short step side. There is a maxium length for a one piece drive shaft, but I can't remember what it is. I think a one piece for a long bed is too long. I no expert though.

There is a pic of the truck.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't four by's and 73 up long boxes have a single shaft out back, I don't think length is a problem.

shaft

That looks great. It is stainless I take it. What is the lengeth of it U-joint to u-joint? and what are you using for a tranny? Is your engine in the forward v8 position?

I need to make one. save me the measuring trouble.

Thanks,

Peter

Sixty8,
My 72 Long Bed 4X4 has a one pc drive shaft too. Remember that a 4x4 has a transfer case, that ends up making the rear drive shaft shorter.

Guys,I think the reason for the two piece shaft was for the trailing arm trucks.I own two 85'chevy 4x4s and 1 2wd short bed 83' and they all have one piece shafts. I think youlll be alright going with a one piece shaft in your long bed truck. The only place to check is where the factory put the crossmember for the trailing arms, if you get to much wait on the back it might cause interfernce with the shaft and the cross member.Unless you have leave springs and the trailing arm crossmember is not in there. Then you should be ok

I would advise you to make your won measurements if you are having a driveshaft made. There are too many variables involved such as engine location, transmission type/length, rear ride height, etc.

HYPERMAN

It is aluminum, 55 inch long. I have a 327 .40 over, 350 tranny. Its rated for horse power well over what my 327 will be putting out.

I would agree with Slammed67, you should take measurements of you own. There are to many varibles. IE differential, tranny, etc. I will say the guys at Denny's Drive shaft are very professional and are happy to expalain this to someone who lack the knowledge, as I did.

My '72 w/ leaf rear has a 2-piece shaft and I don't have trailing arms....So, now what is the reason for them? Balance? Rigidity?

my dad had a one piece in a LWB about 10-15 yrs ago-the shaft came from a ford truck and he got u-joints to adapt ford/chevy frrom napa -but at the stock ride height he had to cut the bottomout of the x member the DS goes through-I think with a lowered truck that wouldn't have been required-or the cut x member could be reinforced

69 1/2six pack bee,
im not claiming to know every thing that chevrolet and gmc did i wasnt on the design team but your reply that balance and rigidty might be the answer. all i know is on the few 67-72 trucks ive worked on they had trailing arms and the two piece shaft carrier bearing was located at the same cross-member as the arms thats all! I aint on here to start problems just tring to help out
