where does the voltmeter get its reading from?

The stock gauge gets its signal to read from the alternator

haha, for a third time here :p
Just put it onto anything that has power when you turn the ignition key on It doesn't use very much power. We knew that you are running a single wire alternator, so thats why we are telling you this, lol

The stock gauge get it's power from the same power source as the other gauges.. In other words, from the back of the instrament cluster, which gets it from the ignition power source. You can use the same source that powers the other gauges, or run a wire down to the fuse box and plug it into a ignition controlled power tap.

so with me going with a 1 wire alternator, i shouldnt need to rewire anything?

NeCrOmAnCeR, i dont think he was asking how it is powered, it was more where it gets its reading from. like a tack, its powered from a switched source, but gets its reading from the distributor.

the msd 6al box needs a 12v switched source. i hooked it up to the original pink wire that was ran to the dizzy.

Make sure you always double check your wiring on switched and not switched, using a test light. I have seen many people mess up stuff like this or kill thier battery.

you shouldn't have to rewire your guage just because you went to a 1 wire. i went to a 1 wire and didnt' touch anything to do with the guage and it works fine

For any voltmeter I have seen, the power source and where the gauge senses the voltage are one and the same. Voltmeters only need a power wire and a ground to work.
Yes, you don't need to rewire because of a different alternator, I thought you were installing aftermarket gauges. Sorry for the confusion. |

I'm just a little confused on one thing and maybe someone can explain it to me . I agree the voltmeter will just simply read the switched source but I also thought ( on these trucks at least ) a wire ( path ) from the voltage gauge ran back to the alternator and thats the point where the factory set up measured the voltage potential ? I always thought it was the brown wire #25 on the 2 wire connector ?

The brown wire goes to the ignition switch. This is what energizes the alternator. The voltmeter can receive it's power from any switched 12 volt source.

Mike , thanks for straighting me out on that . My mind must have been stuck on the old days when they " some times " used a gauge with an ampmeter movement to measure between the alternator and the starter selenoid main power terminal.
