Are NOS that much better then good repros? I have been considering going the GM route instead.

OK, here goes!! I have placed the NOS rockers next to my reproductions. I have taken the tape measure out to measure them. This is my opinion, however it is based on what I can see, feel, measure and fit...
1) The GM rockers are noticibly lighter than the repops. (GM 3 lbs/ Repops 4 lbs) 2) The GM Rockers have lots of wrinkles, even to the point where the material laps over itself in one of them. The repops are perfectly smooth. 3) GM R/H rocker measured out to 39 5/64". Repop R/H 39 4/64". 4) GM L/H rocker 39 4/64". Repop L/H 39 4/64". 5) GM rockers have lots of ragged edges to grind off. Repops are all smooth. 6) EDP coating on one of the GM rockers look like a bird crapped on it. The EDP coating on the repops are consistant. 7) GM rockers did set in place a little easier than the Repop, but I think that it is because they are made from lighter material, so they flex a little easier. 8) GM rockers retail at $110.95 each... Repops $14.95 each. Now that equates to a $192.00 difference!!!!!!! Now you be the judge.... I stated facts here, not conjecture and there are some inconsistancies in both the Genuine GM and Reproduction rockers. However I have found more inconsistancies in the GM rockers than reproductions..... WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Nothing quite like Wes's "hard sell" technique.
If I didn't know any better I'd say he is trolling for a few strikes from the MUST USE NOS Ebay crowd. Did you remember to use the word "RARE" in your description???

Wes
I assume you are comparing NOS to Goodmark? Are there any fitment issues with the aftermarket rockers? In the past I tried a pair of repops and had problems, especially where the front corner of the door sits in the rocker.

These were not purchased from Goodmark. They are manufactured by Triplus. As stated above the GM rockers seem to fit a little better, but I chalked that up to them being produced from lighter material. I have personally installed these rockers into my Panel and helped install them into at least 6 other trucks. Some went in without any issues and a couple we had to fight them some. But when you compare the price and the fact that you will spend a couple of hours on the GM rockers either getting them ready to install or straitening them once they are installed, they seem to be a whole lot better bargain... WES, thanks for being candid about the part differences. I hope you get as much out of the NOS parts as possible.
Another point to consider when comparing how NOS and repops fit is the rest of the truck. There were manufacturing tolerances that cause every truck to be slightly different. Plus, any slight "hits" the truck may have taken over the years, etc. have a big impact on how ANY replacment part will fit. As for me, repop is just fine when I know the quality is as good or better than NOS.

I was told the same thing, that the reproduction rockers are nicer than the GM's. I have not got to that point yet but I actually got ahold of them both, I have 2 GM's and 2 Repros.
We will see.... Jason |
