Vortec?

My friend has a 1986 GMC truck with a V-6 in it. He says it has a stock Vortec engine? Is this true?

I don't think the 4.3 was a vortec until 93 maybe?

Vortec 4.3 V6's were fuel injected, and TPI injected I do believe. 4.3's in our trucks in 86 were not even TBI. TBI wasn't used in full size trucks until 87. Vortec 4.3's were used in S10's.

This has come up before. Just like the link to the GM site says, GM introduced the Vortec name in 1986. As for only being in S-10s, not so fast Mike, here is a scan from the 1986 Fullsize Chevy Truck brochure. It's not the vortec we like to think about now, but it's when GM started using the term...

The name Vortec came from the combustion chamber design. It was first used with the introduction of the 4.3L in 1986, so yes he has a Vortec in his truck.

You are correct Chris. The V-6 that I had in my 86 was a Vortec.

Jordan is correct on the L31 Vortec 4.3 V6 that came in S10's. This to me is the only one I count. I don't care what GM called the carbed V6's in the full size trucks.

i believe you're thinking of the L35 Mike, the L31 is the '96+ 5.7. 92 was the first year for the CPI 4.3, which is commonly referred to as the Vortec V6, although the TBI 4.3 was still available for 92 and 93, it disappeared with the body style change in 94.

Not sure whats wrong with the thread... might have gotten alittle off topic there but ohh well.

So they guy most likely has a Vortec, but its carborated and has a castiron intake, and is just not what one would normal consider a vortec like those that are around now/ early ninties

ughh, sure.

This thread started with a question:

Several people said no because it wasn't fuel injected, a few people said yes and linked to GM information, and a few several people said 'not in my opinion'. Now we're back to repeating information that is just a few replies up in the thread and should move on to new things.

If you go back to the original question, it's been answered (and by the original poster I might add). Talking about it more is pretty much a waste of bandwidth. I see this turning into a flame war and I really don't want that.

When it comes down to what mother GM wants to call her engines, who are we to argue?
