From what I understand, messing with that spring is a good way to lose a finger or worse. Somebody on here got hurt pretty bad trying to do it.

It would be eaiser to work on the petals out of the truck. To remove them you will need to drop the steering column and unbolt a few bolts that hold the brake booster on. I'll try to take a pic tomorrow of the petals out of the truck so you can see what it looks like...

i have a set of pedels out of the truck... but i have like 4 rivits holding mine onto the firewall and didnt feel like drilling them out. if i take the setup out i am just going to put the otherone in..... but i thought it would be easier to just take it apart in the truck.

Thanks for all the help

Why would you change out the pedals with another set???? Standard and auto pedal setups are the EXACT same thing!!! The only difference is is that the clutch pedal has been removed by undoing the spring, the rod clamp and by sliding the rod out of the housing. I have done this conversion on several trucks and also done the reverse by changing an original auto to a standard, you just slide the clutch pedal assembly into the housing and hook it up.

I thought the pedals were different. Isn't the brake pedal wider with an automatic?

What he said!!^^^^^^ 67-72's had the exact same size pedals for the clutch and the brake even the auto was the same size, because as I had said before on the clutch removal that is all that they did at the factory just left the clutch pedal out.

There is an indention in the cab behind the insulation that the top spring mount fits in to slide it out. You will have to fold back the insulation to find it, but once you do, it takes about 5 min to get out. Other then that, its really simple to unbolt and remove.

Let's remove a little mystery from this one:

Step 1: remove bolt and nut
Step 2: pry arm off of shaft
Step 3: push shaft and pedal to the left out of bushings

DONE!

Total time should be less than 15 minutes, including removing and replacing instrument cluster.

I grabbed mine with dikes and pulled it and it popped off. It's not a man killer spring, just a little attention getter spring.

Cut it off and go

A 3" or 4" die grinder makes a nice clean cut right up by the shaft...no fires like the torch. Why wouldn't you want to cut it? It is not worth anything to keep.
