anybody running a pintle hitch?

My current bumper is pretty much trashed, and I need to install a pintle hitch. DOn't get me wrong, the bumper is OK for towing and such, but it's got a couple rust holes on the top, it's a "step" style.

Anyway, in the summer, I tow Howitzer cannons for my school, and it's just around the campus (for retreat parades and the like), but I've currently been using their Dodge M37's for the task. Now that I'm not a student anymore, I can't use them, and since I got this truck, my old officer still wants me to do it for him. I can't use a ball for them because they use the ring type hitch requiring at the minimum a ball and pintle hitch.

I've found a few online with the cheapest being about 45 bucks. Does anyone have any manufacturers that they prefer? I'd be using a Curt hitch if I have my choice because I've always been partial to their products and I get them at a steep discount. Anyone have any thoughts on Curt products as opposed to others?

EDIT: The hitch would only need to hold about 200 lbs tongue weight and tow a total of 1800 lbs over some rather rough trails (not rock climbing or anything, but mud and sand would be the words for the day as well as some fairly steep hills).

I use a ball and pintle hitch on my newer truck (K3500) that I picked up used in a salvage yard (the hitch that is). Was bolted and tack welded on a step bumper on a 77 C30 3+3 from one of the utility companies. Paid about $40.00, cleaned up real nice, don't know the brand name but it held a UHaul trailer long enough to tow my 402 C20 parts truck from Buffalo to Phila. area in one piece.

my truck has a pintle hitch on the back bumper. the p/o apparently used old military trailers to pull stuff around his farm. i don't know what kind it is, but I can go take a pic for you.

I'd appreciate it if you could take the pic. Is it a standard hitch or a ball and hitch?

i believe its just a pintle hitch, because I don't see a ball...do you mean a regular bumper ball in combination with a pintle hitch? but anyway, here she is:

yeah, the pintle with the ball has a trailer ball for the lower half of the hitch. That's the type that we use on the M37's. I think I know where to get one. Thanks a lot!

BTW, would you think of selling that one?

I will eventually, but since I'm going with a new bumper, I can just bolt it to this bumper and call it a day.

Try military surplus dealers, you may get a genuine one cheap from them.

I bought one that fits into my standard hitch reciever, cost something like 120 bucks, and works fantastic. This way if I need to haul the flatbed, in goes the pintle, if I need to haul the boat, in goes the ball.

Which Howitzer are you towing? M102?
Take some pictures when you get your truck set up to tow it!

Sounds good to me!

I wouldn't have a problem with a free 502!

Try a millitary surplus store, I got my 5 ton pintle from the same M1008 that I got my axles from, made my own bumper and used a 2" reciever to be able to use different hitchs and drops.

This one is ready for a standard hitch!!
I'd take 70 plus S&H (again not light)

Neither prices negotiable.
These will be on the parts board after this. But thought I would offer you first..
