I thought painting them alive was a bad idea. That they " breath " through the shells in some way.

I think thats a protected species....at least it is here in Florida.
If a fish and wildlife officer caught you with those shells you would be going to jail. Becareful. I have a big one on my wall. But I dont think its a box turtle maybe a snapping turtle. I will take a picture of it and post it. Last edited by jamis; 03-23-2004 at 09:26 AM. |

yes, painting them while they are alive is bad. that will kill them. they do breathe through their shells.

I hope you use shells from turtles that have departed naturally...or God will cry.
Did you know even picking up a desert tortise can be a death sentence? A tortise will evacuate all it's fluids ( piss it out I guess)and may not be able replenish it. They look really nice though...I bet you could make them out of fiberglass and have an unlimited supply. I would buy one. I would also go so far as to say your talents are worth more than $30 a crack, but $30 is $30. Good luck. Hey Tuck, I bet if you made a full sized fiberglass replica of a real sea turtle shell and painted it in natural glossy tortise shell colours you would sell an immense amount. They are popular decorations in any nautical themed restuarant, bar or home and are illegal to trade in. I'd love one.

Turtles and tortouses do not breath through their shells, then have noses and mouths just like us. what happens is that the paint solvent can be absorbed into the bloodsteam and causes problems. More acurately, what the paint does is limit the growth of the shell, and then turtle continues to grow inside the shell, and dies a slow death to suffocation of internal organs.
I have raised turtles and tortouses for a long time, and this thread does bother me, but, to each their own. The paintjobs are cool looking though. |
