you can get rid of the smog pump and related garbage, no problem. I would sugest keeping the vapor canister, and make sure you run a return line also.

Cat and pump and leave the rest. If you take stuff off like the EGR then the ECM will mis it. You would have to burn a new chip. EGR doesn't hurt performance.

With no cat you might have to look at a heated O2. Some people have had issues where the exhaust was not heating the O2 enough because of the loss of cat and the back pressure it created.

My cat is off because I thought it was plugged and causing it to run hot. So far so good. It's a 88 454 but basicly works the same as your 87.

I do occasionaly and I mean once ever several weeks, get the check engine light to com on for a few second. It only does it about half temp after starting. It's a EGR code. I think what is happening is the thing is going closed loop before the O2 is ready. once it's closed loop the EGR comes online. I think the O2 is still cold and not acting correctly so it misreads when the ECM is expecting a mixture change from the EGR. This only hapens when it's not fully warm and driving about 2k on the tach.

I agree about trying to retain the EVAP. It's not hurting performance in the least. Wouldn't trip any lights but it will help keep the truck from ever smell of gas fumes.
