Emissions Equipment or lack there of?

I got a '78 3/4 ton, I live in a emission checked area and I've looked over the truck from front to back and don't see any emissions sticker along with no emissions equipment. No cat, no egr, no air pump (well, no air pump don't surprise me) and I was wonder how I go about the emissions check? Am i gonna have to put a cat and what not on? Did this year truck even come with those things? Thanks in advance for any info you can shed on this subject.

in the states that have emissions checks, if your vehicle was not equipped with those items from the factory then you have no legal need to put them on now. Just keep the original owners manual (or find one) plus other paperwork handy to show that your truck had no emission extras on it.

Same goes for seat belts, mufflers and anything else, if the vehicle didnt have the items from the factory then no need to add them unless you want to.

Ok that sounds good. I wish I knew for sure if my truck had the stuff originally. Anyone know when they started putting cats on trucks?

Cat: In '79, I believe. I have a '78, and I don't have or need cats (I have dual exhaust). Bty by buddy's '79 has a cat.

As far as egr, and air pump - I don't think those were added until the mid 80's.

Also, in my '78, there is no emissions junk (no air canister, no fuel vapor lines, nothing). Just an engine.

Hope this helps.

billybangbang -

I live in phoenix also, and don't have any of that emissions stuff in my truck. So I'm curious, what model chevy/gmc truck do you have ?? - I've a gmc half-ton 4wd.

And I haven't had any problems with emissions at all with my '78. I've owned it for 8 years. All they have looked for under the hood is to make sure that my vaccum lines seem hooked up, and that I have the hose from my carb to my valve cover, but that's it.

I wonder why it's different for us? My truck was first registered in March '78, do you think the Cat/EGR/Air Canister rules weren't in effect until later in the year??

Bob

I think requirements were a little different for the heavier (3/4 and 1-ton) trucks. I read somewhere that cali trucks in '78 got cats but non-cali trucks didn't till '79, but i think it said that the lighter trucks had them a year or two earlier. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

Here's the site for any who are interested.
