did you make sure the vacuum line is still hooked to the modulator? that is what my th350 acted like then the hose came off.

if you want to attempt to diagnose yourself and to get more info, look at:

www.netgearhead.net

I rebuilt my 700r4 myself thanks in part to that site.

Hey aggiedave98

I'm gonna be rebuilding a 700r4 in the next couple of months and I'm gonna be needing help... I wanna build one that can stand up to a mild 355 putting out at tops around 300 - 340 HP off the flywheel, and around 350 - 400 ft lbs of torque or so

The one I have has a lot of km on it, and a blown seal so it needs a total overhaul. I've never done anything like this, and thats the reason why I am getting it so I can rebuild it

Yes, that was the first thing I checked...
And the hose did come off... so when I re-attached it
the trannsmission still wouldnt shift out of first...
Kinda pisses me off!!

Anothering thing to check

How is your ATF level? If it isn't totally full of fluid, it won't shift properly...

Trans Trouble

I may have missed the transmission type, but each has its irregularities. On an older unit I couldn't get the upshift, and it was the govenor. This was a powerglide.

On a 79 camaro with a 350, it was the TV cable being "stuck" on a barb or nick in the cable, the TV happened to be at the near wide open throttle setting, due to my big foot, and did not retract as designed for a lighter throttle shift, hence it might have shifted out of first at 5000 RPM. The short term cure was to disconnect, and manually push it back in the sheath, then lay it on the manifold until I got it home and changed the TV.

You will not have kick down. This may be suitable for a 350 turbo, but I would not drive a 220r4 or 700r4 like this. They will consume the clutch paks if the TV is not exactly where it has to be.

Hope this helps.

Today a friend of mine with the same truck told me that it could be the vacum modulator.

I got one for $2.99.

Pulled out the old one and got dosed with trans fluid...
I KNEW that must have been it, I didnt think that was right.
Kinda got happy and mad at the same time....

Put the new modulator on, fired up the truck, and took it for a spin
......................

STILL WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CRAP!!!!

Just e-mail me if you want it. I'm always going to houston so I can help in getting it to you. I just need to get rid of it. Its been sitting for a year all sealed up. Like any good board member should since we have had a few people get taken for a ride I'll stand behind the sale of this transmission in writing.

Ya probably thought of this but check the modulator vacuum line for fluid/cloggs. That will cause the problem as well. If the line was off something could have gotten there.

Alright here is what I did today....

A friend of mine told me to take out the govener (my spelling sucks) and clean it really really good so that the shaft in the middle doesnt have a problem moving up and down,,,

Did that, still wont shift...... "on its own" I tried to shift it manually and it worked... all three gears.....

My friend also told me to check the vacum pressure at the carb and that it should be 14 - 17 in of pressure... it wasnt pulling any pressure at all so I moved it to the next post on my edelbrock carb which was pulling 14 - 17 in of pressure.... still wont shift on its own...

NEXT I plan to buy a new hose to go from the carb to the metal pipe that goes to the (brand new) rubber hose to the vacum modulator....

Tell me what you guys think.....

One thing to remember with that edelbrock is that if you are checking the vaccum at idle, one of the tubes is ported and one is full vacuum. Doesn't make much difference which one the tranny is hooked up to since you will be on the gas when it is shifting, but sure does when you are checking the vacuum pressure.

Alright today I checked to vacum pressure at the vacum modulator and I had no
vacum at the MOD.

So what I did was got to the local auto parts store and got some vacum hose... ran it directly from the "tee" on top of the intake straight (bypassing the steel hose) to the vacum modulator...
and took the truck for a test run.....

That sucker shifted 110% better than when I first bought the truck over a year ago for $500....

thanks to everyone who helped!!!
