adjusting the valves
My lifters are ticking a bit and I think I need to adjust the valves. I have done this with instruction before, but I am having a hard time remembering.
I plan on taking off the valve covers and tightening the rockers until the puhrod is snug. Can this be done at whatever revolution the engine is in? Do I have to put it at TDC for the intake and then rotate 1 turn for the exhaust? Should the pushrods always be "tight enough not to be loose" no matter where the engine is at in it's cycle? I hope this makes sense. Thanks guys.

Here is a link to a thread on this same subject. There are several methods, but I like this one because it is pretty much "idiot proof."

There are three ways to to it.
1. Run engine with valve cover off, loosen rocker untill it ticks, then tighten about 1/2 turn after ticking stops......very messy. 2. Get a manual, put #1 at TDC, adjust both valves on one, refer to manual and you can adjust diferent valves on each cylinder, following the manual. When adjusting, you have the rocker loose, gently turn the pushrod w/ your fingers while tightening the rocker. When it is at zero lash you feel the pushrod stop rotating. Do this a couple of times to be sure of zero lash. Then tighten the same 1/2 turn. THen rotate until #6 is at TDC, and do the same. 3. Put EACH cyl at TDC, one at a time, and adjust both valves on that cyl, same way described above. rotate engine until next cyl and repeat untill all are done! BTW to tell if you are at TDC, watch the intake valve. After it closes, when that cyl is at the top of it's travel, your at TDC. I personaly use #3. Steve
