Cab Removal

I am going to be taking my cab off of my pickup. I was wandering if i put a 2x10 under the door rails and hook a chain on both sides of the board and lift with a tractor if i could life off my cab without bending anything. I have the seat and doors off. Also i want to sand blast the bottom of my cab. Could i tip it over on its back or is that a bad idea. Otherwise i just might lift it up high enough with the tractor to get underneath it.

I used a 4x4x10 with "J" hooks bolted through the ends, attached the chain to the "J" hooks then used my cherry picking to lift the cab off. The wieght of the cab (no doors, enterior stripped) bent the "J" hooks, but it came off with out any problems. I have read that numerous members us 4-6 friends and a case of beer.

You can lay the cab on its back to sand blast/paint etc. As for lifting the cab, try stringing 2 4x4's through the door openings shaped like a # and lift it with your loader.

Was there any damage, and was that just a 2x4. Do you think a 2x10 will hold, i have the fron clip off so it is just the cab.

You will see a 2X10 across the top of the doors. The 2X4 was just underneath it for an extra support. No damage. Have done several this way. I put towels under the doors to keep from scratching anything. I just the welding vice grips to keep everything in place. A third strap goes in the middle to the core support when you are doing the whole thing.

Just take it slow and be careful. I like the hoist because I can do it a little at a time. I hope you have good control over the tractor.

P.S. Don't forget to disconnect the ground strap under the cab before lifting it like I did.
