What was the first year for HEI?

I have a 1974 Monte Carlo that has a points distributor. I was under the impression that GM cars by 1974 had the HEI distributor? Everything looks stock.

In general it was 75. There were some specific GM vehicles that had it prior to that, the Monte probably wan't one of them. I think it was Caddys and some Olds.

The engine that came in my Blazer was from a 75 or 76 PU, how can I tell if it is HEI or not?
Thx

The 74 El Camino had a points distributor
and the 75 had an HEI. The only reason
I know that is the engine in my 69 C-10
P/U came from a 75 El Camino.

My 1974 Z28 Camaro has factory HEI. It was a mid year change I believe.
From 1975 all models went to HEI.

I had a 72 pontiac grandville with a 455 that had HEI it was one of first ones it was used for about 2 years. It was the size as a points cap and all the wires were hook together as one piece on the top of the cap. I still have it I will take a pics later.
