Welcome from So Cal. Where abouts in CA are you. I'm not sure which rear end the C20 has. You can change just the gears, but only to a certain point.

What rear-end do you have? You won't have to change the rear-end housing, but you *might* have to install a different series carrier (pumpkin). GM rear-end carriers come in 2, 3 and 4 series.

Carrier series to gear ratio correlation is as follows (or so I've been told):
2 = up to 2.90
3 = 3.08 - 3.90
4 = 4.11 & up

HTH

But wait....there's more....yet ANOTHER welcome from Mississippi. This time it's from the central section. Jackson to be exact. The only thing we got growing is the crime rate! But I don't let it bother me. Not too many snot-nosed gangsta'-wanna-be punks know how to steal a column shift! Hehehehehe. That first spark of a hotwire attempt and suddenly they lunge forward out into traffic.....weeeee. Oh well, I got off the topic. Hey, welcome to fhe funny farm!

Another Bay Area member! Welcome aboard! IRT your gears, there are other things to consider too, like what tranny you have, tire size, etc. As a 2x on the freeway, you'll probably want to be up in the high 3s.

sactoC10, loved the Governator seal. LMAO!

welcome from Ohio!

since your truck is a '68, I'm going to assume that you have the HO52 rear axle. this axle looks like a Ford 9 inch on steroids (round diff cover). there are only 4 gear ratios you can get for this axle...3.90 (aftermarket), 4.11, 4.57, and 5.14 (all factory). you could also swap in a newer axle with higher gears. good luck!
