transmission

i have the 4 speed with granny tranny, i can never remember the name of the dumb thing, its very common, has the two pto side plates and it s in my 71 truck. my ? is ,is there a tranny thats a direct bolt on maybe a little modifacation, that has the 5 speed mine runs at 2850 @ 65 3000 @ 70 to 75 mph, if there is, what is the name of the tranny? are they rare? are they expensive? are they heavy duty? just want to save a little on gas, plus im gonna put a tpi to help with the gas problem also./ any help would be great.

the tranny you have is the SM465. there are a few options for a 5 speed swap, most commonly talked about is the NV4500 out of a newer Chevy or Dodge pickup. they are basically like the SM465 (granny low in 1st) except they have the overdrive 5th gear. there are also others, such as Clark, Spicer, and Fuller 5 speed overdrives out of older trucks.

tranny

are these trannies a direct bolt up? which of these are the best? will they help with my gas milage? will my 4x4 hook up to these trannies? whats a good ballpark on a price for one of these things? do you have one? im in az 85902, can one of these trannies be shipped? which one is the most heavy duty? sorry bout all the questions, but i have to learn as much as i can bout this old truck, ive owned it for 14 years now , oh will the truck still cruz down the road the same? will i still beable to pull heavy loads without any problems? any other info you know about them would be appreciated. thanks, 71

The NV4500 is a truck transmission, available in 1 ton trucks. I think it has since been phased out. Have you been following project super burb in Four Wheeler? They swapped in a NV4500 and kept the NP205 transfer case. It is not a direct bolt-in but advanced adapters makes the brackets needed. The NV4500 and NP205 were never mated together from the factory. As far as bolting the NV4500 to your SBC I'm not sure if there are any concerns, but you'll end up with a hydraulic clutch.

1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm

I have a 4500 in my 70 4x with the stock clutch linkage, cost me a belhousing from Advance though.

ok guys im seriously curious now! how much does one of these trannies cost and all the parts , can some one give me a parts list of what i need to change out these trannies, how much work is involved and how much modification? thanks boyz
